Steps
5 , 2 with no county course
  1. You are here Step 1 of 5 Get in

    Get on site

A first practical qualification in carpentry, joinery or general site trades. You learn to measure, cut and fit, and to work from a drawing rather than from what looks about right.

    How long
Six weeks for the short award, or a year on a full time course. An apprenticeship takes longer and pays you while you do it.
    What you need
GCSE grade 2 or 3 in English and Maths, or a Level 1 first
    Starting pay
    £23k

    5 courses in Gloucestershire

Leads to A Level 3 in the trade, or work as an improver on a glazing or joinery team.

  2. Step 2 of 5 Qualify

    Qualify in the trade

The site carpentry and joinery qualification that an employer reads as trained. By this point you are fitting frames and glazing units to a standard somebody else signs off.

    How long
Two to three years as an apprentice, paid from the first week.
    What you need
A Level 2 in the trade, or time on site

    1 course in Gloucestershire

Leads to Work as a qualified glazier or joiner, and the conservation jobs that ask for more.

  3. Step 3 of 5 Specialise

    Specialise in conservation glazing

The best paid glazing work is slim double glazing, secondary glazing and sash windows in listed buildings, where the window has to look untouched from the street.

No county course at this stage

No county provision has been found at this level. Today this is learned on the job, with a firm that already does the work.

  4. Step 4 of 5 Lead

    Run the work

Leading a small team, pricing jobs, and carrying the responsibility for the finish on a whole property rather than on one opening.

No county course at this stage

No county provision has been found at this level either. Most people get here by running their own firm.

  5. Step 5 of 5 Degree level

Learn the building behind the window

One county course sits above the trade: a short guide to retrofitting historic buildings, taught at the Royal Agricultural University in Cirencester.

    How long
    Two days.
    Experienced pay
    £36k

    1 course in Gloucestershire

Leads to It is a short course and not a degree. What it adds is the conservation thinking, on top of a trade you already have.
