The door that is actually open The professional retrofit route is the least gated way into this sector. The Level 3 Award in Domestic Energy Assessment asks for no previous qualifications and no experience, and the Level 2 and Level 3 Certificates in Retrofit are twenty weeks with no entry requirements at all. The trades route is stricter: Level 2 bricklaying wants GCSE grade 3 in English and Maths, and Level 1 plumbing wants grade 3 and sixteen-to-eighteen. If you left school without passes, this is the door that is actually open.

  1. You are here Step 1 of 5 Get in

    The open door

Six weeks, part time, and no qualifications needed. Coordinators do not usually start here, but the door is open and it costs less than anything else on this list.

    How long
    Six weeks, part time.
    What you need
    No qualifications needed
    Starting pay
    £32k

    1 course in Gloucestershire

Leads to A Level 3, or assistant work on a retrofit team.

  2. Step 2 of 5 Qualify

Learn how a job is planned

The construction, surveying and planning T Level. Two years of how a job gets designed, costed and sequenced before anyone turns up with a van.

    How long
    Two years, full time.
    What you need
    No previous qualifications or experience

    1 course in Gloucestershire

Leads to A Level 4, or technician work on a site team.

  3. Step 3 of 5 Specialise

    Run part of a scheme

Three ways up at this level: the design and build technician apprenticeship, the built environment HTQ, or the senior technician apprenticeship. All three teach you to hold a programme together.

    How long
Two years, part time or as a paid apprentice.
    What you need
A year of construction experience, or a relevant Level 3

    3 courses in Gloucestershire

Leads to Coordinating a street of homes rather than one house.

  4. Step 4 of 5 Lead

    Take the whole scheme

Signing off a retrofit scheme end to end: the standard it is built to, the money, and what happens when a survey comes back wrong.

No county course at this stage

No county provision has been found at this level. It is the clearest gap on this pathway.

  5. Step 5 of 5 Degree level

    Add the old buildings

The same short course on retrofitting historic buildings. A coordinator who cannot read an old building will sign off work that damages one.

    How long
    Two days.
    What you need
    A Level 3 qualification in a built-environment subject
    Experienced pay
    £48k

    1 course in Gloucestershire

Leads to Schemes with listed or traditional property in them, which in this county is most of them.

This is as far as the research goes for retrofit coordinator. 1 level above this has not been researched in this prototype, so nothing is claimed about it either way.
